LAUNCH OF THE GREEN GHANA DAY

The Agona West Municipal Assembly in its effort to support the government in restoring the greenery nature of our environment and forest depletion has observed the Green Ghana Day today, 13th of June, 2022 at the Swedru School of Business.

 Mr. Bismarck Offei, the Municipal Director of Education in his address, stressed on the usefulness of trees in our environment. He indicated that, trees help to combat global warming by absorbing carbon dioxide while releasing oxygen back into the air.

 Man’s survival depends on plants and as it’s said “if the last tree dies, the last man dies”, hence the need to plant more trees to replace those cut down.

He urged the pupils to cultivate the habit of planting trees to help restore the greenery nature of our environment so mankind will continue to live.

Hon. Evans Addison Onumah Coleman, Municipal Chief Executive(MCE) of Agona West said, His Excellency Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo Addo initiated the Green Ghana campaign due to the rate at which our forest is been depleted. He reiterated that, the government is committed to ensuring the restoration of Ghana’s greenery environment by planting 20 million trees countrywide.

He explained that, we couldn’t observe the launch last Friday 10th June, because Agona west was part of the organizing committee for the Regional Launch at Gomoa Nsuaem, hence the need to postponed it to today.

He added that, so far the Assembly has received 13,000 trees that will be planted across the municipality and therefore, called on all and sundry to embark on the tree planting exercise to green Ghana.

Mr. Osei Kofi, the Constituency Communication Director for NPP who represented Hon. Cynthia Morrison, Member of Parliament for Agona West added that, trees reduce the amount of storm water runoff. it reduces erosion and pollution in our waterways and may reduce the effects of flooding.

He added that, trees reduce wind speeds and cool the air as they lose moisture and reflect heat upwards from their leaves. He appealed to the pupils to support the President’s initiative by planting and monitoring the growth of the trees which will be planted.

The MCE, led a team comprising the Municipal Coordinating Director Mr. Ishmael Nana Ogyefo, Municipal Finance Officer Mr. Pobi Donkor, Mr. Justice Frimpong (Swesbu Headmaster), Mr. Bismarck Offei, Mr. Fredrick Boateng (NPP 1st Vice chair) and some pupils to symbolically plant trees to mark the exercise.
